Welcome to Trips for Kids - Rio Grande!
Hello bike enthusiasts,
Welcome to the website of Trips For Kids Rio Grande. If you haven't heard of us yet, we are a local non-profit dedicated to taking at-risk youth out on mountain bike trips to teach important lessons in personal achievement, environmental awareness, and having healthful fun in the outdoors. We are able to offer kids great opportunities because of the support of bicyclists such as yourself. We are into the Fall season and we are looking for volunteers and members.
There are two easy ways you can help:
1. Become a ride leader! You don't have to be a pro MTB racer to help some kids. If you can ride, you can volunteer. You can make a difference in the lives of kids by riding with us for just a few hours. Volunteering for even one ride makes a big difference. To sign up, just go to the volunteer section of this website .
2. Become a sponsoring member. All it takes is a small contribution and you can help without even leaving your house! Not only do you get the reward of knowing you made a difference, but you can let everyone know how cool you are with a TFK water bottle. If you want to help a little more, you can show off with a TFK t-shirt. You can become a member by simply going to the donate section of this website.
Thanks for your support!
The National Chapter
Operating in the United States, Canada and Israel, Trips For Kids® (TFK®) has opened the world of cycling to over 60,000 at-risk youth through mountain bike rides and Earn-A-Bike programs. The more than sixty Trips For Kids chapters we support combine lessons in personal responsibility, achievement and environmental awareness through the development of practical skills, and the simple act of having fun.
The inspiration for Trips For Kids® came in 1986, when founder and director Marilyn Price was pedaling up Mount Tamalpais, gazing at San Francisco. As a frequent volunteer at St. Anthony’s Dining Room in the heart of the inner city, she thought how wonderful it would be if these kids could join her. Most had never seen their city from that perspective. Most had never challenged themselves physically. All spent their days surrounded by cement as well as constant exposure to drugs, violence and gang involvement. It was then that Marilyn’s vision for Trips For Kids began to take shape.
After functioning as a pilot program for two years, Trips For Kids incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1988. Since then, with the help of hundreds of volunteers, many thousands of disadvantaged kids from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area have experienced the natural world from the seat of a mountain bike.
The program expanded dramatically in 1994 with the establishment of the Re-Cyclery bicycle thrift shop, and an Earn-A-Bike program. In addition to providing great deals on bikes and parts and affordable transportation for Bay Area residents, the shop funds a majority of Trips For Kids program costs. Meanwhile, the Earn-A-Bike program teaches youngsters valuable life skills in a safe environment.
Encouraged by our success in San Francisco and by others interested in starting similar programs, in 1999, we began supporting the development of Trips For Kids chapters around the United States and around the world.
We invite you to get involved and make a positive impact in the lives of underserved young people. Trips For Kids provides the materials, moral support and inspiration that an individual or group needs to help disadvantaged kids discover the joy of mountain biking.
